En los primeros lugares donde se instaló la tecnología LED en su formato de luces de inundación, fue en los estadios y pabellones deportivos. Estos buscaban el ahorro energético y reducir los costes de electricidad asociados a la actividad deportiva en primetime.
Estos sistemas de iluminación de alta potencia, que oscilan entre los 100 y los 4.000W, son muy eficientes en grandes áreas, respecto a los sistemas convencionales predecesores. En esta horquilla de potencia es básico lograr la menor resistencia térmica desde el chip al disipador de calor.
